About College

• Formerly named Berry White Medical School, Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh is a leading medical institution in the Northeast region. Former British Philanthropist Sir John Berry White offered his earnings to establish the institute in 1900 AD. He was a brigadier in the British Army. During the old undivided days in Assam, this institution created an awareness of allopathic medicine education. Berry White Medical School transformed into a full-fledged medical college. Assam Medical College was established in November 1947 and was inaugurated by the first Chief Minister of Assam, Late Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi.

• Prof. Sanjeeb Kakati is the Principal cum Chief Superintendent of the college with an MBBS degree and an MD in medicine. Spanning over 7 decades, the prestigious institute is renowned for producing top-notch medical graduates, and postgraduates, besides assisting in developing other medical colleges. The institute aims to provide high-quality, affordable healthcare facilities with advanced super-specialty services.

• The first principal of the college was Dr. Hem Chandra Baruah. The late Governor Sri Prakash inaugurated the hospital wing of the college in 1948. The outpatient wing, paraclinical, and clinical department continued functioning until 1950. All the departments were shifted to the current campus at Borbari after the great earthquake in 1950.
