About College

  • The Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), formerly known as Bangalore Medical College, is a government-run medical school in Karnataka. It is located near City Market on KR Road. It is one of 10 government medical colleges in Karnataka in Bangalore.
  • The BMCRI is an independent institution affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Jayanagar, Bangalore. The college has produced several distinguished physicians, including Dr. C.N.R. Rao, the 2009 Chemistry Nobel Laureate.
  • The university is also renowned for its extensive research output. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rated the college tenth among medical colleges in India in 2018.
  • Dr. Shivram and Dr. Mohammed Shafi Mekhri founded the college in 1955 on the Fort police station grounds. Mr. V. Ramamoorthy, a civil engineer, and architect, constructed it in a record-setting six months.
  • The Mysore Medical Education Society administered the institution until 1956 when it was transferred to the Government of Karnataka and affiliated with Bangalore University. In 1997, following the establishment of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, BMC became affiliated with the new university. The college provides undergraduate (MBBS) and graduate (MD, MS, DM, M.Ch) programs in various medical specialties.
  • It also offers a variety of certificate programs in paramedical disciplines. The college features a well-appointed library, a central research laboratory, several clinical departments, and a teaching hospital.

  • Clinical rotations: The MBBS program at BMCRI takes four and a half years and includes a one-year internship in connected hospitals. The practice courses are meant to give students hands-on training in various medical fields. Most of the time, the shifts last six weeks.
  • Hospitals: The college has a hospital with 1,000 beds. 
  • Hostels: The college has separate dormitories for male and female students. While males have dormitories only for undergraduates, females can take advantage of this service through graduate school. There are 300 beds in the boys' dormitory and 88 beds in the girls' dormitory.
  • Food: Most students think that the hostel food is good and clean. The menu has a lot of different things to choose from, like Indian and Continental meals. Students who don't eat meat have their own dining hall.
  • Transportations: Students can also use the bus service at BMCRI. The shuttle runs between the college and several important bus stops and subway stations. Students don't have to pay to use the bus service.
