About College

  • Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) history stretches back to 1823 when the French government established a medical college in Pondicherry to teach French residents contemporary medicine. Pondicherry was taken over by the Indian government from the French in 1956 and the college was renamed "Dhanvantri Medical College." 
  • Following the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on May 27, 1964, it was renamed "Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research"  on July 13,1964 . Ambassadeur de France aux Indes, SE Le Comte Stanislas Ostrorog, laid the foundation of the medical college building on the outer limits of the town in 1959, and the institution relocated to its current site at Gorimedu in 1964.  Some of the faculty of the college are: Dr. Tamil Selvan, who is the Professor of Clinical Immunology, Dr. Gunasekaran Dhandapany, who is a Professor of Cardiology and Dr. Niranjan Biswal, who is a Senior Professor of Paediatrics.
  • This college is in Jipmer Campus Rd, Jipmer Campus, Dhanvantari Nagar, Puducherry. Dr. Vikram Kate is the current dean of the college. He has over 125 publications in international and national magazines.
