The Lady Hardinge Medical College for Women was established in 1914 as a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Mary's visit in 1911–1912. Lady Hardinge, the wife of the Viceroy then, was the first woman to build a medical college for women. It was nearly impossible for Indian women to pursue a medical career without a specific medical school for women. At present the Director of the college is Dr. Subhash Giri.
Lady Hardinge formally laid the institution's cornerstone on March 17, 1914. Sadly, this noble woman passed away later that year, and on Queen Mary's recommendation, the college and hospital were named after Lady Hardinge to honor the founder. The college has been affiliated with the University of Delhi since 1950.
Postgraduate programs were started in 1954 in affiliation with Punjab University, and in1956, with the University of Delhi.
Initially, only female postgraduate students were permitted to enroll in the courses. However, since 1970, both men and women have been accepted for various postgraduate courses. 142 PG candidates are now being accepted by LHMC, 4 MCH pediatric surgery seats, and 4 DM neonatology seats.
