• The old Hubei Sanxia College and the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering/Yichang became CTGU on June 29, 2000, after approval from the Ministry of Education. The founding of CTGU can be traced back to 1946; bachelor's degree programmes were introduced in 1978; and postgraduate and foreign student programmes debuted in 1996. The CTGU is authorized to award the degrees of bachelor, master, and doctor, as well as to enroll overseas applicants for CSC scholarships and UNAI membership. 

• Additionally, contracts for the collaborative construction of CTGU were signed in 2009 by the People's Government of Hubei Province and the Ministry of Water Resources. In addition, CTGU received recognition from the Hubei Provincial government as a "Advanced Unit of Opening Up" in 2010 and as a "Demonstration Base of International Student Education" in 2014. China Three Gorges University has developed into a comprehensive institution with distinct advantages in a number of academic fields, access to hydropower, and a strong social standing.    

• The Provincial People's Government designated the institute as a "domestic first-class university construction university" in 2018. It listed three disciplines within it as "domestic first-class discipline construction disciplines": civil engineering, water conservancy engineering, and electrical engineering. After receiving an MBBS degree, medical students have improved possibilities in the university. On the CTGU Campus, it also provides a variety of housing options and other amenities for Indian students.
