- One of the oldest and most prominent medical schools in Kerala, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram (also known as Thiruvananthapuram Medical College) was established in the year 1951.
- Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore, is credited for founding Government Medical College Thiruvananthapuram, usually referred to as Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The current founder and dean of Government Medical College Thiruvananthapuram is Dr. V. Geetha.
- The medical college has grown its academic and medical services over time. As new departments were added, the college eventually developed into a regional center for medical education, research, and patient care.
